Remember that super corny movie with the guy in the fishing suit that terrorized those teenagers? Yeah, I didn't either, but recently they came out with a modernized version. I noticed it initially because of the press! The tours and media advertising for this remake(ish) of the classic I Know What You Did Last Summer were phenomenal. As a horror fan, I was pretty sucked in.
Tonight, I went to see the new film, expecting a remake of the original movie, which, admittedly, I had never watched. What I saw in the theatre was so different. It was this kind of modernized sequel. To avoid spoiling the plot, I’m simply going to go over the characters and make my way straight into the review! Trust me, this movie is worth watching. The movie follows a group of young adults as they return to their hometown for an engagement between Danica (the typical airheaded but funny blonde) and Teddy (the jock-y type). The evening of their engagement party is when we see the car accident take place, which sets up the whole plot. Eva, the main character, is witty, strong, and super fun to watch on screen. Chase Wonders’ performance in this film is one of the best things about it. Eva is also reunited with her high school boyfriend in light of the events, Milo. Early into the film, they run into the final member of this group, Stevie. We also see some familiar faces from the original movie: Ray and Julie, the only known survivors of the original massacre. Think of them as this franchise's Dewey and Sydney. Finally, the last notable characters are Wyatt, Danica's second fiancé, Juda, the town priest, and Grant, Teddy's father and Mayor of South Port.
A similar story to the original film unfolds: some kids are being reckless on the road and cause a car to fall over the edge of a massive cliff. This eventually sends the friend group into a spiral after they agreed to keep the incident a secret between the five of them, and after a year passes, they just start dropping like flies. The first kill scene is truly shocking, and it follows Danica receiving an anonymous note that reads “I know what you did last summer.” Classic, right? This movie's twists and turns stood out to me, and that's saying quite a bit as someone who has been such a regular consumer of horror films. The film also picks up fast and is a truly exciting ride all the way to the end. I also will admit; I initially had no idea who the killer could be. This very well may just have been a lack of judgment in my part, as my friends were able to guess by about the midpoint of the film, but not knowing honestly made the experience more enjoyable!
I’ve noticed that the reviews of this movie seem to be pretty mixed, but let me tell you - I truly enjoyed it. I left the theatre chatting to my friends about just how well the cast performed, as well as having a newfound motivation to watch the original. It is one of the best modern horrors to hit theaters since Long Legs, in my opinion. Worth a watch!
Thanks for joining me on this review journey! If you enjoy this review-like format and would like to see more posts like it, please let me know! I’d be happy to deliver upon that request. Thanks again!
